Mazda is one of the smaller Japansese car pakers. It produces around one million cars per annum - all from factories in Japan. Recently it began producing automobiles overseas and currently produces approx. 300,000 units in other countries.
The company was founded by Jujiro Matsuda in Japan in 1920. The name "Mazda" comes from Ahura Mazda, the highest Zoroastrian God of reason who granted wisdom and united man, nature and the other gods.
Mazda started exporting to the US market in 1970. It became very successful and went on to create the Mazda Rotary Pickup solely for North American buyers. To this day, Mazda is the only automaker to have produced a Wankel-powered pickup truck. They are also the only automaker to have produced a rotary-powered bus (the Mazda Parkway, offered only in Japan) or station wagon (within the RX-3 line).
